INTRODUCTION

Language is an important part of human life. Language has been acquired by humans since being born into the world. Chomsky (1960) has revealed the concept of Language Acquisition Device (LAD) which is the instinctive mental capacity that allows babies to acquire and produce language. This theory asserts that humans are born with an instinct or "innate facility" to obtain the language. Language acquisition in children usually takes place between the ages of zero and five years. Before the age of one year a baby has been making sounds that have no meaning. About five or six months the baby starts learning to speak one word but has no meaning. At the age of one year the sound of baby's language began to clear, at this age a mother began to introduce everything that is in or around the house.

Fatmawati (2015: 63) said that language acquisition is a very long process, starting from when children are not familiar with a language until they are fluent in language. Thus, language acquisition is a natural ability possessed by humans to absorb or obtain language from their immediate environment. The term language acquisition is different from language learning. Krashen explained that acquisition is a process of conscious threshold that is identical to the process that a child goes through in obtaining his mother tongue. In language acquisition, children are usually not aware that they are acquiring language, but they only realize that they are using language for communication. Whereas language learning is a conscious process to produce knowledge about language.

According to Klein (1984: 6), the acquisition of the first language is the acquisition of language that occurs when a child who has never learned any language and has just started learning a language for the first time. The mastery of a language by a child begins with the acquisition of the first language which is often called the mother tongue. So, the acquisition of the first language is a process of how the child acquires his native language abilities naturally in accordance with the cognitive development, social interaction, and linguistic development of the child itself. Many things affect the process of acquiring children's language. One of them is family environment. According to Sebayang (2018: 108), the family environment has a very important influence in the acquisition of children's language. The critical age for children to obtain and learn languages is between the ages of eighteen months before the end of baligh. Therefore the family has an important role to remember when at the age of eighteen months the closest person to a child is the family, especially parents. So, children born in a family environment that uses regional languages, will get local languages as their first language.
